„Echo“

Ist jemand hier?

Hier, hier!

Komm!

Komm, komm!

Warum meidest du mich?

Meidest du mich, meidest du mich?

Lass uns hier zusammenkommen!

Hier zusammenkommen!

In Ovid´s Metamorphosis the nymph Echo is trying to confess her love to Narzissus. But due to the loss of her voice she is just able to repeat the ending of the sentences she hears. Therefore, Echo is just able to copy instead of creating words on her own. About 1000 years later the question of Creation and Reception still lies in focus. The philosopher Walter Benjamin confronts it in his Essay The Artwork in the Age of its technical Reproduction (1934). Because of technical inventions the arts get confronted with changes over and over again, which is why their definitions need repeating adjustments.

Nowadays, an artwork can be an exact replicate, which may seem to be accompanied by the loss of its Aura, its mythological authenticity (Benjamin). Stepping away from the necessity of originality like the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, it seems legit that every repetition is not just a copy but also creates difference and own values.

With the exhibition Echo the a.r.t.e.s. kunstfenster-Team and the artist Becker Schmitz are also raising the question of original and copy, production and reproduction. In its first phase Echo starts with paintings and installations of Becker Schmitz that explore the rooms and spaces of the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities. Later on, participants of a workshop mirror and re-work through these pieces to form an extension of Becker Schmitz´ work.

Becker Schmitz studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and at the freie Akademie der bildenden Künste Essen, where he is teaching since 2018. His work was shown in galleries and exhibitions all over Germany and in cities like Cork, Wien and Stockholm. Becker Schmitz´ pieces can be read as a counterpoint to the fast living present of the art market and popular culture. They are experimenting with lights and colors that enable the recipient to conclude complex interpretations.

With Echo we are opening the a.r.t.e.s. kunstfenster exhibition for creative exchange and participation. The workshop is open for anyone who may be interested. The artistic background may be professional, but this is no necessity. We gladly invite you to the workshop and the two vernissages and are hoping to exchange creative ideas.
