Dissertationsprojekt von Sofie Steinberger

Borders, Spaces and Belonging - everyday life in(between) the neighbouring cities Melilla  (Spain) and Nador (Morocco) between 1940 and 1998
(working title)

Melilla, in Spanish possession since 1497, developed from a military post to the administrative centre of the eastern part of the Spanish Protectorate in northern Morocco 1912-1956. Commercial and belligerent interactions with its hinterland shaped the contact between the Spanish soldiers and the autochthonous Amazigh population since the Spanish presence in the region. Until 1940, the two military bases Melilla and Nador had turned into cities because of the strong military presence and the exodus of the native Moroccan and Spanish mainland population towards the cities trying to escape poverty. Throughout the 20^th century, Melilla experienced a boost as free trade port making Nador the second most important commercial city in Morocco. The border between the cities stands in the centre of these developments. The focus of my dissertation lies on the changing everyday life at the border between Melilla (Spain) and Nador (Morocco) and the development of feelings of belonging through daily trans-border practices and memory narratives within the (inter)national situatedness of the region between the 1940s and 1990s. Thereby, I address the questions: What effect did the (inter)national developments have on the everyday lives of the border population? How did they react/adapt? What role did the border play within the setting; how did it shift in meaning? How do these development coin memory narratives? How have these memory narratives and the (necessity of) daily cross-border interaction influenced feelings of belonging?
The aim is to trace the border population’s lives, interactions and perceptions of space and belonging and to analyse what role the border played within these before the construction of the European border fence. Therefore, I analyse Oral History interviews and written archival sources by drawing on concepts by Bourdieu, Lefèbvre and Anthias.
