Good Scientific Practice

It did not take the various cases of plagiarism that have become public in the past few years to show that there is a good amount of dishonesty, deceit and cheating in academia. After the first big case of plagiarism became known in Germany in 1997, the German Research Foundation (DFG) issued recommendations for “good academic practice”, which all members of universities and research institutions are expected to adhere to.

Participants in the workshop will become familiar with the fundamental rules and values guiding a responsible approach to research in all its phases. We will analyse and reflect the differences and grey areas between good academic practice, questionable practice and academic misconduct. We will also learn how to recognize and avoid misconduct, how it should be thematised and the damage it can inflict – including attempts to cover it up.

Participants will also learn how to find adequate solutions in difficult situations in the academic process, and how to act accordingly. You will be encouraged to address mistakes and problems with your colleagues and within your institutions.

Instructor: Dr. Michael Gommel

Dr. Michael Gommel studied biology with a focus on anthropology and wrote his doctoral dissertation on the image of human beings in human biology. He is a certified systemic coach and process consultant. Moreover, he holds a Baden-Württemberg Certificate in University Didactics.

He has conducted research and taught courses on issues related to science and research ethics as well as medical ethics since 1995. After working at the University of Ulm for thirteen years, he became self-employed in 2008, working primarily as an organization consultant and as a lecturer on the topic “good academic practice”. He was able to gather a wealth of experiences at over thirty institutions in Germany and its neighbouring countries.
