Supervision of Doctoral Projects

a.r.t.e.s. creates optimal conditions for the supervision of doctoral projects at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Our model rests on the close cooperation of an advisory team.

All admitted doctoral students are advised by a primary supervisor on the academic research their project involves. The doctoral student contacts the prospective supervisor in advance to discuss their topic and to reach a supervisory agreement. Both parties sign a bilateral supervision contract supporting the relationship no later than six months after the doctoral student has enrolled.

Doctoral candidates pursuing the standard model of an individual dissertation (Regular Track) are advised by a team composed of the primary supervisor and a second university professor or lecturer. Once a year, the candidate must meet with his or her primary supervisor to discuss the progression of the project.

In the structured model of doctoral studies of the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School (Integrated Track), the advisory team is composed of three supervisors – the primary supervisor and two other university professors or lecturers. The guidelines governing doctoral studies at a.r.t.e.s. indicate that one member of this team must be from a different discipline than the primary supervisor. Doctoral students regularly consult with their supervisory team.

Doctoral students can apply for the admission of an external second or third supervisor both in the Regular and in the Integrated Track.
