Announcements for Doctoral Students from Universities Abroad

Doctoral students and prospective doctoral students from universities abroad are currently eligible to apply for funding in the following two funding lines:

  • Familiarisation stays (max. 2 weeks) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
  • Guest stays (max. 3 months) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
  • Active conference participation at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (max. 5 days)

Please note the deadline for the next meeting of the Grants Committee:

  • Submission of application documents by March 22, 2019

ATTENTION: THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (BMBF) HAS UNFORTUNATELY NOT PROVIDED THE DAAD WITH FUNDING FOR A CONTINUATION OR RE-TENDERING OF THE IPID4ALL PROGRAM (OF WHICH OUR PROJECT IS A PART). THEREFORE, "A.R.T.E.S INTERNATIONAL - FOR ALL" WILL BE DISCONTINUED COMPLETELY AS OF 30th JUNE, 2019.
In concrete terms, this means that travel expenses can only be funded if the journey starts on 30.06.2019 at the latest, while the return date can be after the end of the project. Subsistence costs, however, can only be funded until 30th June. After this date, no support for subsistence costs is possible at all. In addition, workshops can only be funded if they end by 30th June. Furthermore, proofreading grants have to be paid for by that date as well.
The last allocation of funds takes place in April 2019 (application deadline: March 22, 2019).

 

Familiarisation Stays at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (max. two weeks)

The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School would like to offer prospective and early-stage international doctoral students the opportunity to come to Cologne to get to know the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The stay, which should not be longer than two weeks, will give you  the possibility to gain valuable insights into the work of the institutes, research centers and Graduate Schools. It is also a good opportunity to become acquainted with other graduate students and possible advisors. The aim is to attract international doctoral students who are in the early stages of their research to the University of Cologne and to initiate international cooperations such as cotutela agreements.

Conditions for application:

  • The planned familiarisation stay should take place during the semester.
  • All graduates of international universities who are in the preparation or early stage of their doctoral project are eligible to apply.
  • An invitation can only be issued if a faculty member of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who is entitled to confer doctorates supports the candidate's application and agrees to serve as his or her contact person during the familiarisation stay.
  • Applications can be submitted by the candidates themselves or by faculty members of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
  • Funding can be granted for travel and living expenses in accordance with the DAAD funding guidelines.

Required documents:

  • the application form (--> download area)
  • A letter of motivation for the familiarisation stay (2–3 pages) including a brief description of your (planned) doctoral project.
  • Your CV / résumé.
  • A letter of invitation by a faculty member of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who is entitled to confer doctorates. This letter should provide information about the candidate's qualifications and outline the aims and expected benefits of the familiarisation stay.
  • A time plan for the intended familiarisation stay.
  • A copy of the final diploma and transcript of records
  • If applicable, a letter of enrolment as a doctoral students at a foreign university

Scholarships for Guest Stays at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (maximum duration: 3 months)

The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School offers international doctoral students the possibility of a guest stay at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities for a maximum duration of 3 months. This grant is intended to provide international doctoral students with the opportunity to use research facilities such as libraries and archives in Cologne and the Cologne metropolitan area for their work. They also have the chance to network with scholars from the University of Cologne and other regional institutions. This type of grant is also intended to enhance and intensify the relationship between student and advisor, for example in the framework of a cotutela agreement. International guests can also take part in events and colloquia organized by the institutes and departments, and in events organized by the a.r.t.e.s. graduate classes.

Conditions for application:

  • All doctoral students of an international university are eligible to apply.
  • Applications can be submitted by the candidates themselves or by faculty members of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
  • Funding can be granted for travel and living expenses in accordance with the DAAD funding guidelines.

Required documents:

  • the application form (--> download area)
  • A letter of motivation (2–3 pages).
  • A current exposé of your doctoral project.
  • Your CV / résumé.
  • A letter of invitation by the hosting institute or department at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities providing information about the candidate's qualifications and an outline of the aims and expected benefits of the guest stay.
  • An activity and research plan for the intended guest stay.
  • A letter of enrolment as a doctoral students at a foreign university

Grants for Active Conference Participation at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (max. 5 days)

The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School offers conference grants to support doctoral students who have been invited to present their research at a conference at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The presentations must address aspects that pertain to the doctoral dissertation project.
The grant is intended to provide young international researchers with opportunities for network building with peers as well as to increase the attractiveness and international presence of the University of Cologne.

Conditions for application:

  • All doctoral students of an international university are eligible to apply.
  • Applications can be submitted by the candidates themselves or by faculty members of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
  • Funding can be granted for travel and living expenses in accordance with the DAAD funding guidelines.

Required documents:

  • the application form (--> download area)
  • A detailed letter of motivation (2–3 pages) including a brief outline of your doctoral dissertation project.
  • An abstract of your paper
  • An official acceptance letter from the organiser
  • The conference programme (as soon as it has been published)
  • Your CV / résumé.
  • A letter of enrolment as a doctoral students at a foreign university
