Announcements for Doctoral Students of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne

Three types of grants are avalaible for doctoral students of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne:

  • Travel grants for research stays, conference participation and summer schools abroad
  • The proofreading of doctoral dissertations not written in the author's native language
  • Support for the organization of international doctoral workshops in Cologne

Please note the deadline for the next meeting of the Grants Committee:

  • Submission of application documents by March 22, 2019

ATTENTION: THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (BMBF) HAS UNFORTUNATELY NOT PROVIDED THE DAAD WITH FUNDING FOR A CONTINUATION OR RE-TENDERING OF THE IPID4ALL PROGRAM (OF WHICH OUR PROJECT IS A PART). THEREFORE, "A.R.T.E.S INTERNATIONAL - FOR ALL" WILL BE DISCONTINUED COMPLETELY AS OF 30th JUNE, 2019.
In concrete terms, this means that travel expenses can only be funded if the journey starts on 30.06.2019 at the latest, while the return date can be after the end of the project. Subsistence costs, however, can only be funded until 30th June. After this date, no support for subsistence costs is possible at all. In addition, workshops can only be funded if they end by 30th June. Furthermore, proofreading grants have to be paid for by that date as well.
The last allocation of funds takes place in April 2019 (application deadline: March 22, 2019).

Travel Grants for Research Stays, Conference Participation and Summer Schools Abroad

a.r.t.e.s. international wants to increase the international visibility of doctoral models and individual projects at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and to facilitate the international networking of doctoral students at an early stage. To this end, the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School provides funding for research stays, (active) conference participation and summer schools abroad – available to all doctoral students at the faculty. For research stays, the maximum funding period is three months; for conference participation, it is five days; and for summer schools, it is 14 days. However, the actual duration of the research stay or conference may exceed the funding period. The amount of funding depends on actual expenditures and is calculated on the basis of the current travel expenses framework defined by the DAAD.

Applicants are required to submit their applications for travel grants before their departure (if possible two months in advance). The Grants Committee will only consider complete applications submitted on time.

Required documents:

Grants for the Proofreading
of Dissertations not Written in the Author’s Native Language

a.r.t.e.s international hopes to increase the international visibility of dissertations written at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities by supporting the linguistic quality of dissertations. Hence the a.r.t.e.s Graduate School finances the proofreading of dissertations not written in the author’s native language. International as well as German doctoral students at the faculty can profit from this service. For example students nearing the completion of their studies or graduate students from the pertaining research field who are natives in the language of the dissertation might do the proofreading. In most cases the doctoral student can suggest a potential candidate. The proofreading can be supported with a maximal reimbursement of 600 euros per candidate.

Required documents:

  • your curriculum vitae/résumé
  • a brief description of why you need proofreading and a description of the suggested candidate’s qualifications
  • a time schedule for the completion of your dissertation
  • a short statement of the supervising professor regarding the feasibility of the time schedule.
  • the curriculum vitae/résumé of the suggested candidate detailing the relevant knowledge and qualifications
  • the proof of enrolment at the University of Cologne

Please submit the requested documents (ordered as listed above) as one PDF via e-mail to artes-international(at)uni-koeln.de.
