Dissertationsprojekt von Giovanni Pairotti

Ingressivity from Early and Classical Latin to Late Latin (Arbeitstitel)

Tense, aspect and actionality are core grammatical categories that show a high degree of variation across languages. Even though they have to be kept apart from a theoretical point of view, they are deeply interrelated in the grammar. If the actional and the aspectual properties of a predicate are incompatible, languages exploit a device called coercion to get a meaningful utterance from two (theoretically) incompatible elements. Ingressivity is such a coerced reading: unbounded predicates, which have no inherent endpoints, express in some languages the beginning of the situation itself when they occur in the perfective aspect.
The aim of my project is to investigate the evolution of the expression of ingressivity in the Latin verbal system. In Early and Classical Latin an ingressive interpretation of the past perfective forms of stative verbs is not allowed. From the 3rd and 4th centuries onwards, these forms can get such an interpretation and this is the case in the modern Romance languages, which further develop tendencies that we can already detect tendencies in the Late Latin verbal system.
The dissertation is intended to be divided into two main parts: a theoretical investigation and the analysis of Late Latin texts, which will be carried out with the help of philological tools.
