Research at the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne covers all graduate qualification levels – from Research Master via doctoral projects in the Integrated Track to questions addressed by the projects at the Research Lab.

Research at a.r.t.e.s. focuses on the complexity of cultural contexts, with an emphasis on language, history, culture, mediality, anthropology and ethics. Of special interest are hermeneutic and historical-contextual models of knowledge that take into account not only the conditions under which knowledge is created and develops, but also the processes by which it is received and transmitted across cultures. Not least of all, the anthropological-ethical preconditions of a given context play an important role. The research conducted at the graduate school is summed up under the acronym a.r.t.e.s. (area studies and diversity, reception and transculturation, text – language – media, environment and agency, societies and social practices). This mirrors the entire spectrum of disciplines offered at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
