Profile

The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School serves the entire Faculty of Arts and Humanities and covers all qualification levels of academic training in the arts and humanities – from Master to postdoc. The unique scope of subjects offered by the UoC’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities – one of the largest of its kind in Europe – creates ideal conditions for intense, lively and open-minded exchange.

A hallmark of the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School is its interdisciplinary orientation, emphasizing dialogue among young scholars beyond the boundaries of their disciplines. This contributes to understanding a wide range of knowledge processes. a.r.t.e.s. is guided by an understanding of the humanities that transcends the fragmentation of academia into the liberal arts, social sciences and natural sciences. As one of five Excellence Initiative projects funded at the University of Cologne since 2012, a.r.t.e.s. creates a productive environment fostering top-level research. It focuses on the complexity of cultural contexts involving language, history, culture, mediality, anthropology and ethics.

The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne is based on the experiences and structures of the a.r.t.e.s. Research School (2008–2012), which was funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

 

Doing your doctorate at a.r.t.e.s.:

The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School offers the classic, standard model of doctoral studies (Regular Track) as well as a structured, interdisciplinary model for scholarship recipients and members without a scholarship (Kollegiat/inn/en) (Integrated Track). In the initial phase of preparing a doctoral project, students can apply for short-term scholarships.

 

a.r.t.e.s. Research Lab:

The a.r.t.e.s. Research Lab is headed by two professors. Its purpose is to ease the transition between doctorate and academic career.

 

a.r.t.e.s. Research Master:

In the a.r.t.e.s. Research Master, the graduate school prepares highly talented students for an academic career early on. Already during their Master’s studies, these students can begin to develop their research skills and a doctoral project that corresponds to one of the Faculty’s areas of excellence.
